Test driving new AK products.

Hello again friends.  It has been a little while since my last update, and for that I apologize.  The good news, however, is that during this time AK Interactive has released a large number of new products - and with this update I will get a chance incorporate many of these exciting new products into this project.
Hola amigos, hace tiempo desde mi última actualización y por eso me disculpo. La buena noticia, sin embargo, es que durante este tiempo AK Interactive ha publicado un gran número de nuevos productos  y con esta actualización tendré oportunidad de incorporar muchos de estos nuevos productos en este proyecto.

With the release of the new Acrylic Set AK 558 - Iraq and Afghanistan Modern Colors - my choice of subject was simple - create the German Boxer as shown on the box art.  
Con el lanzamiento del nuevo Set AK 558 - Colores modernos para Irak y Afganistán - mi elección del tema era sencillo: crear el BOXER alemán, como se muestra en la caja. 

The kit is from Revell of Germany and builds quite easily.

El kit es de la marca alemana Revell y se construye con mucha facilidad.

 

The release of the New Acrylic Primer Family could not have been better - just in time for a trial on the Boxer.  The camouflage scheme that I chose to finish my model would be that of the Bundeswehr currently serving in Afghanistan so my choice was the Dark Yellow Primer (AK-176).  The colored AK Primers are not only durable , but the colors provide a convenient shade for the base color.

El esquema de camuflaje que decidí hacer en mi modelo sería el de la Bundeswehr actualmente sirviendo en Afganistán, así que mi elección fue el Primer amarillo oscuro (AK-176). Los imprimadores acrílicos de AK coloreados no sólo son duraderos, pero también proporcionan una sombra conveniente para el color base.

 

So now we can get down to the fun part - opening the new colors ( Acrylic Set AK 558).  I begin with an overall spray of the German Sand Beige color.

Y ahora podemos ir a la parte divertida - usando los nuevos colores (Set AK 558). Empiezo con una capa general con color arena beige alemán.

This is followed by the camouflage pattern - first using the German Sand Brown Color.

Followed by the final color of German Grey Beige.  Keep in mind that these new Acrylic Colors are designed to be either airbrush or hand brushed.  The pattern on the Boxer is painted using an airbrush with no thinner - no problem.

Seguido por el color final de Gris Beige. Ten en cuenta que estos nuevos colores acrílicos están diseñados para ser aerógrafiados o utilizados con pincel. El esquema del Boxer se pinta con un aerógrafo sin diluyente- no hay problema.

The camouflage colors are unified using a light application of AK Filter (AK-065) , Afrika Korps Filter thinned using AK White Spirits.  The Filter is simply brushed on lightly.

Los colores de camuflaje se unifican con una ligera aplicación del filtro (AK-065), Filtro  de Afrika Korps diluido con diluyente de AK. Aplicaremos el filtro de forma muy sutil.

With the Filter dry, the next step is to add definition to the surface details.  A variety of AK Interactive Wash Colors are applied around the various hatches, panel lines, and features.  Varying the Wash Colors is an easy way to subtly enhance visual interest.

Con el filtro ya seco, el siguiente paso es añadir definición a los detalles de la superficie. Varios lavados de AK son aplicados en las trampillas, paneles y formas. Variando los colores del lavado es una forma sencilla de mejorar sutilmente interés visual.

Moving to the lower regions of the Boxer, I wanted to portray a vehicle that has been well used over the primitive roads and tracks as found in Afghanistan.  I begin by dampening the wheel wells and lower chassis using AK Interactive Pigment Fixer.

Pigments are sprinkled over the areas already moistened with Fixer.  Applying the pigment in the manner produces texture and volume to the surfaces.

This next series of photos show the sequence I used for weathering the tires.  I began by adding a foundation of muddy color by lightly airbrushing AK Interactive Dark Mud over the wheels and tires.

La siguiente serie de fotos muestra la secuencia que he usado para el desgaste de los neumáticos. Empecé añadiendo una base del color barro aerografiando suavemente con barro oscuro de AK Interactive sobre las ruedas y neumáticos.

Next, a wash made from Pigment Fixer and Pigments was applied into the tread surfaces.

The sidewalls of the tires are treated with a slightly different mix of colors (Kursk Earth & Dark Mud) to add variety and visual interest.

As a finishing touch, AK Interactive Wet Effects Fluid with just a light touch of Black pigment is applied on the tires to simulate dampness.

Como toque final, con el Wet Effects Fluid de AK Interactive y con sólo un ligero toque de pigmento Negro se aplicará en los neumáticos para simular la humedad.

 And finally we have our finished model of the Boxer as seen in service with the Bundeswehr in Afghanistan

There are certain things about our hobby that I find interesting.  For instance, some see the name on a product label and automatically think that this product has only one certain use - and no other.  Make no mistake, the people at AK Interactive spend a lot of time trying to make sure that if we name a product "Tank Dust" it will look like tank dust.  But, that is not to say that this same dust colored effect cannot be used in other ways and on other subjects to good results. With this in mind I thought it might be fun to show the versatility of AK Products using a selection of AK Products - including Naval Effects to weather a Warhammer 4000 Dark Eldar Spacecraft.  Let's see how this works.
Hay ciertas cosas sobre nuestro hobby que me parece interesante. Por ejemplo, algunos ven el nombre en la etiqueta del producto y automáticamente piensa que este producto sólo tiene un uso determinado y no sirven para otra cosa. No os equivoquéis, en AK-Interactive invertimos mucho tiempo en asegurarnos de que si nombramos un producto "Tank Dust" (polvo de tanque) el resultado será exactamente es y parecerá polvo de tanque. Pero, esto no quiere decir que este efecto de polvo del mismo color no se pueda utilizar de otras maneras y en otros objetos con muy buenos resultados. Con esto en mente, pensé que podría ser divertido mostrar la versatilidad de los productos de AK utilizando una selección de productos (incluyendo la gama de Efectos Navales) para envejecer una nave espacial de los Elfos Oscuros de Warhammer 4000. Vamos a ver cómo funciona esto.

I begin by applying a base color of grey followed by application of decals and bright yellow identification colors.
Empiezo por pintar una base de color gris seguido por la aplicación de las calcomanías y marcas de identificación en amarillo chillon.

Celestial chips and scrapes are applied using AK Interactive Acrylic Colors.  In this case I used colors from the Track and Tires Set (AK-557) to create light and heavy chipped effects.
A continuacion realizo arañazos y raspaduras celestes utilizando colores acrílicos de AK Interactive. En este caso he usado los colores del set de Orugas y Ruedas (AK-557) para crear pequeños y grandes efectos de desconchado.

 

AK Interactive Oil Colors are applied to create depth and richness to the painted, grey finish.  Lighter grey colors can be used to achieve fading paint effects.  The oil paints are applied as small dots and then worked into the surface with a brush slightly moistened with thinner.

Los oleos de AK Interactive se aplican a continuación para crear profundidad y riqueza al color gris. Los colores  grises más claros se pueden usar para lograr efectos de desgaste de pintura. Las pinturas de óleos se aplican como puntos pequeños y luego se trabaja la superficie con un pincel ligeramente humedecido con diluyente.

 

AK Acrylic Colors from the Rust Effects Colors Set (AK-551) along with the Rubber Tires Color are combined to make a convincing exhaust color.

Los colores acrílicos del set de Colores para Efectos de Oxido (AK-551) y el color Neumáticos de caucho se mezclan para obtener un color convincente de tubo de escape.

We can see that AK Interactive Wash for Grey (AK-302) Decks is the perfect choice for adding depth and definition to surface features.

AK Interactive Streaking Grime for Light Grey Ships (AK-305) blended backward over the wings create a sense of motion.  First apply a small streak of the Naval Effect over surface, wait for 5 minutes to allow the paint to dry slightly and the blend using a flat brush lightly moistened with thinner.  Easy and effective.

La pintura Suciedad Escurrida para Barcos Gris Claro(AK-305) fundidos hacia atrás sobre las alas crea una sensación de movimiento. Primero apliqué una pequeña línea del efecto Naval sobre la superficie, esperé 5 minutos para permitir que la pintura se secara un poco y entonces la fundí usando un pincel plano ligeramente humedecido con diluyente. Fácil y eficaz.

A highly diluted mix of AK Interactive Salt Streaks and Grey Wash for Kriegsmarine Ships (AK-555) is applied over certain areas to further the effects of paint fading.

Una mezcla muy diluida de Chorretones de Sal de AK Interactive y Lavado Gris para barcos dela Kriegsmarine(AK-555) se aplica sobre ciertas áreas para favorecer los efectos de decoloración de la pintura.

 

AK Interactive Salt Steaks (AK-556) are applied in a the traditional manner over certain vertical surfaces.

Los Chorretones de Sal de AK Interactive (AK-556) se aplican de una manera tradicional sobre algunas superficies verticales.

I hope that this example has inspired you to expand your universe when it comes to choosing the right AK Interactive product for you next project.  Finally, a fun project deserves to be shown in a fun manner.  Here we see the finished spacecraft speeding across the galaxy.

I was inspired during a recent trip to my local hobby store by the many railroad models - train cars already built and ready for painting.  This would be the perfect subject to practice a few techniques and most importantly have some weekend fun.
En un viaje reciente a mi tienda de modelismo local encontre inspiración en los muchos modelos de tren que tenían - vagones de tren ya construidos y listos para pintar. Este sería un buen ejemplo para practicar algunas técnicas y sobre todo pasar un buen rato el fin de semana.

To begin, I decided to customize the paint scheme.  I begin by applying a layer of AK Interactive Heavy Chipping Fluid (AK 089) over the models original red oxide color - followed by the bright blue and white colors.  Even at this early stage I am thinking ahead to the final appearance.  Notice that the blue color is not applied in a uniformed manner.  The subtle variations of color and tone create a visually interesting foundation.
Para empezar, decidí modificar el esquema de pintura. Empiezo por la aplicación de una capa de AK Interactive Heavy Chipping Fluid (AK 089) sobre el color original rojo óxido del vagón, seguido por una capa con los colores azules intenso y blanco. Incluso en esta primera etapa ya estoy pensando en el aspecto final que quiero conseguir. Como se puede observar el color azul no se ha aplicado de una manera uniforme. Las variaciones sutiles de color y tono crean una base visualmente interesante

 

 

After allowing the paint to dry for approximately 1/2 hr., I scrub the top layer of paint using a stiff brush dampened with water to create areas of realistic looking chips and wear showing the original oxide color.

Después de dejar que la pintura seque durante aproximadamente 1/2 hora,  froté la capa superior de pintura con un cepillo duro humedecido con agua para crear desconchones y desgastes realistas que dejen al descubierto el color óxido original.

 

 

Time to personalize the train car using purchased decals and hand painted graffiti.  The following photographs show the steps used.  The larger, stylized graffiti was first created on the computer and then the outline was traced onto the model's surface.

Es hora de personalizar el vagón de tren usando las etiquetas compradas y graffitis pintados a mano. Las siguientes fotografías muestran los pasos utilizados. El mayor y mas estilizado grafiti fue dibujado en el ordenador y luego la silueta fue trazada sobre la superficie del modelo.

 

 

The worlds were painting using acrylic paints and a fine brush.

Las palabras fueron pintadas con pinturas acrílicas y un pincel fino.

 

 

  

A little color was applied using a fine brush, along with other scribbles and slogans.

Un poco de color fue aplicado con un pincel fino, junto con otros garabatos y slogans.

 

 

 

Small scratches, chips and peels are created using a fine tipped brush and AK Interactive Rust Colors acrylic paints.

Los pequeños arañazos, astillas y desconchones se crean utilizando un pincel de punta fina y pintura acrilica AKInteractive Rust Colors.

 

 

I also enhance the chips and scratches that I had created using the AK Chipping Fluids.  The colors used are from the Rust Series of paints and features a very nice range of colors that work great to add interest and visual texture to the finish.
También mejoré los desconchones y arañazos que había creado al usar los Fluidos de desconchado de AK-Interactive. Los colores utilizados son de la serie de pinturas acrílicas de óxido, que cuenta con una gama muy apropiada de colores que funcionan muy bien para añadir interés visual y textura al acabado.

Along the top edges of the care I applied small amounts of Streaking Grime for Panzer Grey (AK-069) which is a very nice grey/reddish color of paint.  The small applications of color were drawn downward across the sides of the car using a thinner moistened brush.  This process can be repeated as desired allowing each application to dry before proceeded to the next.

A lo largo de los bordes superiores del techo aplique pequeñas cantidades de Streaking Grime for Panzer Grey (AK-069), que es un color gris / rojizo muy apropiado. Las pequeñas manchas de color fueron fundidas hacia abajo a lo largo de los lados del vagón usando un pincel humedecido en disolvente. Este proceso se puede repetir las veces que se desee con solo dejar secar bien entre cada vez.

 

 

  

The lower edges of the car were treated with Dark Streaking Grime (AK-024) in a similar fashion.  Since I wanted to create the effects of rail dirt and grime sprayed upward I simply turned the car upside down and continued applications using downward strokes.

Los bordes inferiores de los laterales del vagón se trataron con DarkStreaking Grime (AK-024) de una manera similar. Como quería crear los efectos de la suciedad y la mugre que se salpica desde los carriles hacia arriba simplemente volví el vagón al revés y comencé a fundir hacia abajo.

The roof was treated first using AK Interactive OIF & OEF Wash (AK-121) – a light brown color – used to take down some of the brightness of the white color.
El techo fue tratado primero con OIF& OEF Wash (AK-121) de AK Interactive, un color marrón claro, para acabar con la luminosidad del color blanco.

 Next, localized applications of Light Rust Wash (AK-046) is used to simulate stains and streaks.
A continuación aplique en algunas zonas LightRust Wash (AK-046) para simular las manchas y chorretones de oxido.

 

It is important to remember that painting and weathering does not need to be a long, complicated project.  Toy and hobby shops carry a large range of interesting subjects that we can transform and practice our techniques.  Now for the final results - the weathered rail car. 
Es importante recordar que la pintura y el desgaste no tienen por qué ser un proceso largo y complicado. Las tiendas de juguetes y maquetas ofrecen hoy en día a una amplia gama de vehículos y temáticas interesantes que podemos transformar para poner en práctica nuestras técnicas. Finalmente aquí tenemos el aspecto final del viejo vagón de ferrocarril.

Afrika Korps Interactive - Painting & Weathering Desert Vehicles Pt. II.

In this final chapter of our demonstration showing a desert vehicle I will explain some techniques that can be used to transform our newly painted model into a visually interesting representation of an actual vehicle. After allowing time for the base paint colors to dry thoroughly I can now begin the weathering process.
En este último capítulo de nuestro artículo mostrando como pintar un vehículo del desierto voy a explicar algunas de las técnicas que se pueden utilizar para transformar nuestro modelo recién pintado en una representación visual interesante de un vehículo real. Después de dejar tiempo para que los colores base de pintura sequen bien ahora puedo comenzar el proceso de envejecido.

As we head toward the finishing stages it is important that we have a clear idea of the final result we are trying to achieve. Based upon our desired appearance, we can then make good choices about our colors and the techniques we will use to apply them. Since this is a desert vehicle with a lighter colored base paint I prefer using the Washes with Medium Tones in order to avoid harsh contrasts - of course the colors you choose might be different based upon your preferences. I begin by applying AK-066 Wash for DAK Vehicles as a first step toward creating definition to the vehicles shapes and surface features.
Mientras nos dirigimos hacia las etapas finales, es importante que tengamos una idea clara del resultado final que estamos tratando de lograr. En base a la apariencia que deseamos, podemos tomar buenas decisiones sobre los colores y las técnicas que se utilizan para aplicarlos. Como se trata de un vehículo del desierto con una pintura base de color claro, prefiero usar los lavados con tonos medios con el fin de evitar fuertes contrastes (por supuesto los colores que elijas pueden ser diferente en función de sus preferencias). Empiezo por la aplicación de AK-066 Lavado para Vehículos DAK como un primer paso hacia la definición de las formas del vehículo

   

Using similar, or complimentary Wash colors is a good way to quickly and easily add tonal depth and visual interest to the finish. Here I apply AK-300 Wash for Dark Yellow German Vehicles to selected areas, this is a perfect companion color for finishing medium toned vehicles. As always, thinners are useful to help blend colors and break surface tension.

El uso de colores de lavado similares, o complementarios, es una buena manera de añadir rápida y fácilmente profundidad tonal e interés visual al acabado. Aquí aplico AK-300 Lavado Oscuro para Vehículos Alemanes Amarillos a las áreas seleccionadas, este es un color perfecto para el acabado de vehículos de tonos medios. Como siempre, el disolvente es útil para ayudar a mezclar colores y romper la tensión superficial.

Shadows are enhanced by applying heavier applications of Wash around certain details, in this case the commander's coploa. I will allow the Wash liquid to sit and dry for a period of about 10 minutes before I blend the edges using thinner for a smooth transition.

Las sombras se han mejorado mediante la aplicación de lavados más densos en torno a ciertos detalles, en este caso cópula del comandante. Dejé que el lavado para sentase y secase durante un periodo de aproximadamente 10 minutos antes de mezclar los bordes utilizando diluyente para una transición suave.

From time to time it is important to take a break and assess our progress. As we can see in this photo the Washes have worked well to add volume and definition to the shapes of the model. Shadows have been enhanced by the use of darker and heavier Washes, while the use of lighter colors have created subtle tonal shifts over the surfaces of the entire model.

De vez en cuando es importante hacer una pausa y evaluar nuestro progreso. Como se puede ver en esta foto los lavados han funcionado bien para aumentar el volumen y la definición de las formas del modelo. Las sombras se han mejorado con el uso de lavados más oscuros y más pesado, mientras que el uso de colores más claros ha creado sutiles cambios tonales de las superficies de todo el modelo.

With the base colors of the vehicle established, it is now time to apply the weathering effects. Light stains caused by rain and dust can be easily achieved through the use of AK-067 Streaking Grime for DAK Vehicles.  Irregular lengths of the Streaking Grime are drawn across the surface using a finer tipped brush.  The fluid is allowed to sit for a few minutes and then is blend using a clean brush slightly moistened with thinner. This process can be repeated to obtain a stronger appearance.

Con el color base del vehículo establecido, ahora es el momento de aplicar los efectos envejecidos. Las manchas causadas por la lluvia y el polvo se puede conseguir fácilmente mediante el uso de AK-067 Streaking Grime para Vehículos DAK. Para ello dibujamos con este producto líneas verticales irregulares en la superficie con una fina punta de pincel. El líquido se deja reposar durante unos minutos y luego se funde con un pincel limpio ligeramente humedecido con diluyente. Este proceso se puede repetir para obtener un aspecto más fuerte.

 

Artist's oils may be applied in certain areas to further enhance tonal changes and to add depth of color to the finish. In this example I have limited myself to a few lighter shades of paints deciding only to enhance the highlights and to promote the appearance of paint fading.

Los oleos se pueden aplicar en ciertas áreas para mejorar aún más los cambios tonales y para añadir profundidad de color al acabado. En este ejemplo me he limitado a unos tonos claros de oleo para mejorar los aspectos más destacados y fomentar la aparición de decoloración de pintura.

Specialty effects such as AK-048 Engine Oil and AK-082 Engine Grime should be applied to selected areas to represent uses by the crew.  In this example a mixture of the fluids is being applied to the hubs of the spare road wheels to represent lubrication. Stains are also applied near the fuel cap and on the engine deck.

Los efectos especiales tales como aceitede motor AK-048 y AK-082 Suciedad de Motor deben ser aplicados en las áreas seleccionadas para representar el uso de la tripulación. En este ejemplo, una mezcla de los fluidos se aplicó a las ruedas de repuesto para representar el lubricante. Las manchas también se aplican cerca de la tapa del combustible y en la cubierta del motor.

At this point in the painting process the final weathering and detail painting should be done with your idea for the final appearance in mind. Often, the final steps can take the most time as we must have patience in order to create effects that have a convincing appearance. I also recommend that as you feel you are nearing completion that you begin to take photographs of the model to see if there are any flaws. The camera often can see what our eyes fail to see - it is an important tool for modelers.
En este punto en el proceso el final del proceso de envejecido y la pintura de detalles se debe hacer con la idea del resultado final que queremos en mente. A menudo, los últimos pasos pueden tomar más tiempo ya que hay que tener paciencia con el fin de crear efectos que tengan una apariencia convincente. También recomiendo que cuando sintáis que estáis a punto de acabar la maqueta comencéis a tomar fotografías para ver si hay algún defecto. Con la cámara se puede ver a menudo lo que nuestros ojos no pueden ver - es una herramienta importante para los modelistas.

Finally, I bring you a few photographs of the finished Panzer III. Remember that we began this exercise with a specific vehicle in mind - one referenced from a black and white photograph. As we can see in this first photograph often times it is difficult to find the camouflage pattern through photos, and this appears to be especially true for DAK vehicles as their patterns tended to be subtle.
Por último, os traigo algunas fotos del Panzer III acabado. Recuerda que comenzamos este ejercicio con un vehículo específico en mente - una referencia a partir de una fotografía en blanco y negro. Como podemos ver en esta primera foto muchas veces es difícil encontrar el patrón de camuflaje a través de fotos, y esto parece ser especialmente cierto para los vehículos DAK donde los patrones tienden a ser sutiles.

 The team at AK Interactive have worked very hard in order to determine the correct shades of paint in order to represent the colors of the DAK. These final photographs show the results of this project.
